Interfaith Initiatives

Fr. Scott VanDerveer visits Rabbi Zoe B Zak at Temple Israel of Catskill, for the first in a series of conversations between these faith leaders of two ancient religious traditions. In this episode, Rabbi Zoe and Fr. Scott, who serves both the Church of St. Patrick in Ravena and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Coxsackie, NY, discuss their own ways of coping with the hardships and heartbreaks of leading congregations through a global pandemic.

Temple Israel of Catskill has forged meaningful relationships with faith communities in our area and beyond. With full hearts and determination we join together to: do the work of Tikkun Olam - Repairing the World; share interfaith ceremonies for holidays like Thanksgiving and Yom Hashoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day; share prayer vigils; and, learn about each other by sharing our similarities and acknowledging our differences.

The Interfaith connection is one of Rabbi Zoe’s great passions. She spearheads the efforts to make opportunities for interfaith gatherings and dialogues, supporting the idea that together we can work to make the world a better place.  We whole-heartedly welcome interfaith families and celebrate them in our community. Rabbi Zoe is dedicated to supporting interfaith couples by officiating at weddings and other life cycle events.

Temple Israel of Catskill is honored and grateful to house a beautiful little park called, the Peace Pod, which is an interfaith place of peace at the beginning of the Hudson River Skywalk. The walkway was created and built by the New York State Bridge Authority and originates next door to our synagogue, at the Thomas Cole Natural Historic Site and continues across the river to Olana State Historic Site. Rabbi Zoe’s vision is to fill the Peace Pod with Peace Poles made by the area’s many houses of faith, local artists, businesses and community organizations. On most days people can be found sitting quietly, meditating, lunching or praying in the Peace Pod. Everyone is always welcome!

Rabbi Zoe is an active member of the Greene County Interfaith Community and co-founded The Peace Ensemble, an interfaith music group dedicated to inspiring peace through their music. She also is an active participant at the Greenville Interfaith Council and frequently offers Jewish teachings for Sivananda yoga communities.
